Social work education was first initiated at the University of Minnesota in 1917 via the Training Course for Social and Civic Work program within the department of sociology. The program consisted of five years of course work, resulting in a Master's degree, with the first awarded to Mary Agnes Meier in 1918. Beulah Compton was born on March 29, 1919. She earned her B.A. degree from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1941, her M.A. from Indiana University in 1951, and her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1971. In 1952, she came to the University of Minnesota as an instructor in social work. She spent 30 years at Minnesota as a instructor and professor in the School of Social Work.
